What to do in Malta for First Time Visitors

Malta, though but a tiny country in the Mediterranean Sea, is filled with tons of fun activities for every type of visitor. There’s world class beaches, but also historical gems from its several different periods of occupation. Malta really packs in the variety into its small archipelago. Here’s 10 things that you shouldn’t miss on your next Maltese vacation:

1. Explore Valletta

Take the time to explore Malta’s capital that is full of palaces, fortresses, and historical monuments. Don’t miss out on visiting Saint John’s Co-Cathedral, the National War Museum, or the Grand Master’s Palace. Beyond the landmarks, take the time to stroll around Valletta’s hilly, adorable streets. To me, it looked a bit like a European, ancient version of San Francisco, and it was delightful! If you’re a history buff/enjoy cultural experiences, Valletta will probably be your favorite memory from Malta.

2. Visit Gozo & Comino Island

Malta is actually made up of 3 three islands, Malta (where the capital, the international airport, and most of the population is), Gozo, and Comino, with the latter 2 being the most visually stunning island in terms of natural scenery in my opinion. Visiting Gozo & Comino is very simple from Malta mainland – you can either take a guided tour (there are several offered all over the streets) or take one of the ferries that leave every 45 minutes from Cirkewwa Harbor. They are very inexpensive at €4.65 round trip and the journey takes a short 30 minutes.

The main draw of these islands are their azure waters and stunning beaches and coves. The public transportation systems on these islands are unfortunately not uber reliable, so unless you’re planning to rent a car and drive yourself from location a to location b, your best bet would be joining a boat tour. For around $40, you can enjoy a full day boat tour exploring the most famous spots of the two islands like the Blue Lagoon, the Dingli Cliffs, the Blue Grotto, and more. Its the best bang for your buck!

3. Discover Marsaxlokk and the “Love Malta” Wall

Another famous location in Malta is a little harbor town called Marsaxlokk. Here you can get a glimpse into a traditional Maltese fishing village – this is the location where most of Malta’s fish are supplied from and there are tons of boats in the harbor at all times (and an ubiquitous fishy smell). There’s a massive tourist market set up every day, too, with unique Maltese trinkets and clothes. The famous “Love Malta” wall is also located in Marsaxlokk, the perfect, quaint touch to an already charming village.
